Dandy Lane, Manitoba
Project Overview
Introduction
Nadi Group submitted an entry for a semi-permanent installation for the Back Lane Public Art Project.
Project Summary
Dandy Lane imagines an installation that comprises of oversized-abstracted dandelions.
Dandelions and back lanes are often associated with negative connotations and behavior; unwanted, pesky, pervasive, derelict, persistent and delinquent. By abstracting the form of the dandelion, and increasing the size to monumental proportions, it can no longer be overlooked.
Dandy Lane transforms the pragmatic infrastructure associated with alleys into a viable artistic expression that reflects the burgeoning vibrancy associated with Winnipeg’s downtown. Winnipeggers didn’t give up on the downtown, and neither did the persistent dandelion!
The dandelions are constructed by sculpting high-density foam that is painted bright yellow, and embedded with fiber optic lights.
There are four strategies in which the dandelions can be installed in situ; hanging (light weight cables fastened to the buildings),perched (anchored directly to the buildings), free standing (light weight steel stems support the flower), and fitted (wedged between). Allowing various types of installation affords the building owners and tenants flexibility and control over how Dandy Lane engages with their property. The inclusion of the fiberoptic lighting promotes safety and security in the back lane at night. The materiality speaks to availability, longevity and costs associated with the project.
The overall vibrancy and playful characteristics associated with DANDY LANE aids in the creation of a unique identity for the back lane and helps encourage placemaking.
